Stone Masons by Mark Jee

The area researched was a little arbitrary, but was roughly bordered by Wolverhampton, Halesowen, Bromsgrove, Henley, Coleshill, Tamworth, Lichfield, Walsall. It excluded Cannock, Stourbridge, Stourport, Kidderminster, Redditch, Coventry, Nuneaton and Atherstone.

For the Birmingham area it may miss out a few people who were only active over a few years in periods when I did not have access to local directories, or were so small that they were never listed. Coverage for areas not in Birmingham is less complete, particularly for period after 1900, and nonexistent after 1940. Coverage is 1815-1973, when Kelly's ceased.

Where an entry is identical for successive directories both are incorporated into one entry (i.e. 1875-79). Where there is some difference, or there is a directory between the two where person is not entered, then a new entry is included. Different spellings are listed for what is probably the same person and then separate entries have been made. If a street is given with no area it is Birmingham (e.g. "New Street"); other New Streets will have the appropriate town or city shown.

Sometimes it is clear whether the firm claims to work in Marble or Stone, both or, in a few cases they do marble chimney pieces, statuary or are a sculptor. If there is doubt they are listed as “Mason”. In Earlier Directories, often for smaller roads, the address lists a street and then another to show what area it is in (i.e. Mill Lane, Bradford St). This is not two separate addresses, although in a few cases a firm may be listed having two addresses but if this is the case there is an "and” between the two addresses.
