Thomas Boden Wilks

Thomas WILKS was born before 6 May 1829 at Chelmscote, Brailes, Warwickshire, England. He was baptized on 6 May 1829 in Brailes, Warwickshire, England.

He appeared in the census in 1841 in Turweston, Oxford, England. He appeared in the census in 1851 in Bullring, Deddington, Oxfordshire, England.

He appeared in the census in 1861 in 15, Beak Street, Birmingham, England. The entry had incorrectly been transcribed as Wilk, Chelmscote as Chelmarsh and Thomas has a middle name which looks like Bishop. His marital status is married but there is no wife shown so they were presumable separated by 1861. Thomas mother Rebecca is also living there and her marital status is "Widow".

He appeared in the census in 1871 in 15, Beak Street, Birmingham;

He appeared in the census in 1881 in 48, Fazeley Street, Birmingham,

He appeared in the census in 1891 in 2 Court House 5, Milk Street, Birmingham,

He appeared in the census in 1901 in 88, Meriden Street, Birmingham,

Thomas died on 11 Nov 1903 at 2 Back 78, Meriden Street, Birmingham, and he was buried on 18 Nov 1903 in Warstone Lane Cemetery, Hockley, Birmingham in Public Grave Section O Number 822.

On the cemetery plan there is a memorial to Burton but the reason for this is unclear On the night of the 1871 census Rebecca, Thomas's mother was there, and also Jane BODEN - a visitor. Thomas's marital status was recorded as "married" and Jane's as "single", so Thomas was married to someone else.

The Family Bible has an entry that Thomas married Jane BODEN on 3rd December 1870. This cannot be correct. In later census returns they are shown as man and wife, but almost certainly they were never legally married. This may also explain why Sylvia BODEN WILKS who was born in Dec 1872 went to live with her grandfather, Eli BODEN in Worcester.
